Food and health care would become more expensive and less accessible for people across Alabama if the budget bill that the U.S. House passed last month becomes law. Alabama Arise has released two new fact sheets explaining how the bill would increase hunger and hardship for families who are already struggling to make ends meet.
Read our new fact sheet on the threats to food assistance for more than 750,000 Alabamians.
Read our new fact sheet on the threats to health coverage for nearly 200,000 Alabamians.
The House bill’s proposed funding cuts to health care and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) would devastate local economies and endanger Alabama’s ability to pay for basic needs. It would increase preventable suffering for children, older adults, and people with disabilities. And it would cause all this harm to help finance efforts to renew or expand tax breaks for wealthy households and highly profitable corporations.
Here are a few ways the House bill would increase hunger across Alabama:
- It would pass the buck for SNAP funding to the Alabama Legislature.
- It would take food assistance away from many families with young children.
- It would take food assistance away from some refugees and victims of domestic violence.
-
It would reduce SNAP benefits over time for everyone receiving food assistance.
And here are a few ways the House bill would undermine health care for every Alabamian:
- Around 190,000 Alabamians could lose health coverage.
- Alabama’s economy would take a $1.14 billion hit.
- Incentives for Medicaid expansion would be blocked.
- Alabama’s health care system would be pushed closer to collapse.
- Health care costs would increase for everyone.
