Dear Green American,

Walmart is taking steps backwards in protecting people and the planet. Recently the company announced that it will likely miss its 2025 and 2030 targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

This is a huge problem since Walmart is the largest grocery chain and is a huge climate emitter. Refrigerators in the company’s stores using potent super-pollutant gases, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), are leaking and accelerating the climate crisis.

TAKE ACTION

An investigation by the Environmental Investigation Agency and Green America, using advanced technology in grocery stores in Northern California, detected significant refrigerant leaks. We found half of the stores we visited had leaks of climate-polluting gases including significant leaks in Walmart stores.

Eliminating HFCs and adopting climate-friendly refrigerants is a top solution to address the climate crisis that can prevent nearly half a degree of global warming.

BUT grocery chains are considering a false solution to HFCs called HFOs – a new chemical refrigerant that breaks down into PFAS – forever chemicals. Clearly,we don’t need more PFAS in the environment.

Now is not the time. Walmart needs to follow through on its climate commitment and adopt only natural refrigerants for its stores...Tell Walmart they must act now.
