John,
When our Social Security system was first dreamed up, FDR made sure that “no damn politician” could scrap it.1
We put those pay roll contributions there so as to give the contributors a legal, moral, and political right to collect their pensions and their unemployment benefits.
For nearly a century, generation after generation has defended and expanded our Social Security system, adding Medicare, Medicaid, and important technical changes like cost-of-living adjustments. Now, Donald Trump and his Republican Party want to take a wrecking ball to all that we’ve built.
They know that if they succeed in cutting our benefits, people will be outraged. That’s why Trump is rolling tanks through the streets of DC and deploying Marines against protestors in Los Angeles. He is seeking to silence dissent through violence and intimidation.
We need your voice right now, demanding to know whose side your Senators are on. Can you urge them to speak out against Trump’s military attacks on protestors?
Right now, Trump and the Republicans are scheming to ram through a bill that would steal people’s health care to give tax breaks to billionaires. That’s the sort of thing democracy is supposed to prevent―which is why Trump and his cronies are dismantling the levers of democracy at the same time.
Instead of spending millions to round up working people in their communities and parading tanks through the streets of Washington DC on Trump’s birthday, we should keep building our country up. How many Social Security telephone operators that Elon Musk’s DOGE fired could be re-hired with the money spent on Trump’s tank parade?
This is an inflection point for our country. Send a message to your Senators demanding that they rise up and side with the people!
In solidarity,
Alex Lawson Social Security Works
