Trump escalated his authoritarian assault on Los Angeles over the last 48 hours, John.

Not only did he deploy 2,000 additional National Guard troops, but he also sent 700 active-duty Marines against peaceful protesters who were simply standing up for their neighbors targeted by ICE raids.

This is the first time in 60 years a president has seized control of a state's National Guard without the governor's consent. The last time it happened? 1965 — when President Lyndon B. Johnson federalized Alabama's National Guard to PROTECT civil rights marchers walking from Selma to Montgomery against violent state opposition.

This is a sick inversion of that history.
