SIGN NOW: Don’t let Trump’s Los Angeles crackdown become the new normal. Congress must not fund these attacks on our rights, our neighbors, and our free speech >>
John, people across the country are rising up and exercising the basic right to peaceful protest, demanding an end to Trump’s unlawful detentions and the pain they’re inflicting on families just trying to work and survive.
But instead of listening, President Trump is responding with military force. [1]
Against the wishes of local elected officials and law enforcement, he’s deploying the National Guard to Los Angeles and threatening to send in Marines – not to protect anyone, but to provoke confrontation.
Trump has already spent at least $134 million to militarize Los Angeles [2] and is demanding Congress give him billions of dollars more to continue funding ICE raids in our workplaces and schools. [3] Every dollar spent on this hateful crackdown is a dollar taken from healthcare, food, and the services our communities actually need. Congress can – and must – step in now.
Tell Congress: REJECT Trump’s funding for unjust ICE raids and end this crackdown on our most fundamental rights >>
Putting armed troops in our cities to crack down on residents’ free speech is a serious escalation and detracts from their mission to keep us safe. If we stay silent while our neighbors are raided, peaceful protests are crushed, and everyone’s rights are stripped away, Trump will take it as a green light to go even further.
Militarizing communities already in crisis only fuels chaos and destroys trust. What Trump is doing in Los Angeles is a blatant overreach – and is against the wishes of local and state leaders, and even local law enforcement. [4]
It’s clear what he’s after: stoke violence (ideally in front of news cameras) so he can scare his base, criminalize dissent, and justify turning our country into a police state.
And the timeline tells the truth: Trump rapidly sent troops to Los Angeles that local authorities weren’t even asking for, but refused to send the National Guard in when local authorities actually requested help during the insurrection on January 6, 2021. [5]
Add your name now and demand that Congress reject Trump’s crackdown and protect our rights.
John, this is a defining moment. From Los Angeles to Washington, Trump is using fear to force through an extremist agenda. He’s trying to silence people who disagree with him – especially in cities like Los Angeles that have stood up to his mass deportation machine.
Thanks for all you do,
The team at Common Cause
