Our government spent this summer attacking the services and supports we rely on. It’s hard to keep track of all of the attacks on disability rights. Some politicians are trying to use this to sneak in harmful changes to accessibility laws. They think we won’t notice — but we’re not going to let them get away with it! Read on to learn how to submit a public comment by Monday, June 16th!
The Department of Energy is trying to get rid of important rules in Section 504! Section 504 says that businesses and organizations that get money from the government cannot discriminate against people with disabilities. Section 504 has rules that tell many different places, like schools, hospitals, libraries and other public buildings what they need to do to be accessible.
Right now, the Department of Energy wants to get rid of Section 504 rules protecting accessibility. They want to get rid of a rule that says new buildings that the Department of Energy funds have to be accessible. They also want to get rid of a rule that says renovated buildings that the Department of Energy funds have to be accessible. If they let this happen, more federal agencies will try to do the same. This means more parts of Section 504 can be taken apart in the future. In the long run, attacks on 504 hurt us all.
But we can stop them! The Department of Energy needs to hear from our community about why Section 504 is important. You can submit a public comment telling the Department of Energy why Section 504 matters to you.
DREDF has put together a step-by-step guide [[link removed]] on how to write your public comment and submit it on the Department of Energy’s website. DREDF’s guide includes pictures of the website to show you where to go and a Plain Language [[link removed]] script you can use to send in your comment.
The deadline to submit your public comment is Monday, June 16, 2025.
Send in your public comment telling the Department of Energy not to change Section 504 as soon as you can! Share this action alert with people you know and ask them to protect Section 504 by sending in a public comment too!
People with disabilities deserve buildings that we can actually go inside and do things in. No exceptions. Accessibility is a right for everyone and we will not let it be taken away.
