State legislative strategies to covertly preempt local public health policymaking



Local governments are often on the forefront of enacting innovative public health policy, and local control over public health issues is especially vital to addressing social inequities. But states are increasingly preempting, or prohibiting, local control over public health issues. In a new paper, researchers at the New York University School of Global Public Health systematically identified strategies to pass, obscure, or enhance preemption in five policy areas.

Benefits of increasing postpartum Medicaid coverage



Alarming increases in U.S. maternal mortality have generated national attention, a search for policy solutions to promote maternal health, and an increased recognition of how important the postpartum period is for mothers’ and infants’ health and well-being. In a new brief, Urban Institute researchers provide new evidence on the access and affordability barriers that could be reduced and the health problems that could be treated if uninsured new mothers were to gain coverage through a postpartum Medicaid extension or broader Medicaid expansion.
