Queer Southerners can tell you all about what's beautiful, John – our families, our joy, the resilience of our movement and the vibrant communities we've built all across the South.
We also know what is NOT beautiful: Blocking hundreds of thousands of transgender people who are insured by Medicaid or an Affordable Care Act marketplace plan from accessing the care they need.
President Trump's so-called “Big, Beautiful Bill” would block gender-affirming care for transgender people of all ages with these federal insurance plans – on top of so many other despicable elements that would disproportionately harm people with lower incomes, BIPOC communities, and LGBTQ+ people. It's already passed in the House – but we still have a chance to block these cruel provisions in the Senate.
Tell your Senators: Vote NO on a budget that puts the health and wellbeing of transgender people at risk. Rush a message now, before it's too late. ([link removed])
This bill would have real, devastating consequences for transgender people. A study from the Williams Institute shows that 21% of transgender people – approximately 276,000 people – are enrolled in Medicaid. This bill would be hugely disruptive to so many people.
It would also cut $1 billion in funding from the CDC's HIV Prevention services, impacting essential services like low-cost or free HIV testing, discounted PrEP access for community health organizations, and research into HIV prevention efforts. Medical experts warn that this would lead to an increase in new HIV cases.
The Congressional budget should focus on addressing the very real economic hardship many Americans are facing – but once again, extremist lawmakers in Congress would rather attack LGBTQ+ folks, BIPOC communities, and people with lower incomes for cheap political points than do the real work of helping American families.
Send a message now telling your Senator to vote NO on any bill that attacks LGBTQ+ health and denies transgender people the medical care they need to thrive. ([link removed])
In these tough times when transgender people are under attack like never before, we need folks like you fighting back, taking action, and rallying your people to do the same however you can.
Thank you for all you do in the fight for LGBTQ+ equality,
Allison Scott
