Teddy Roosevelt gave us the Antiquities Act in 1906 to protect some of the most iconic places in this country, including the Grand Canyon and Devils Tower.

He called it vital. He knew some places were too sacred, too wild, and too American to be left to the whims of profit and politics.

Now, two guys who love to name-drop Roosevelt—Ryan Zinke and Doug Burgum—are doing everything they can to blow that legacy to pieces.

Let me break it down:

Until Zinke came along, no president in U.S. history had ever reversed a national monument. But he helped Trump gut Bears Ears, and now Burgum is prepping the final blow—trying to dismantle the very law Roosevelt gave us to protect these places.

So what’s the endgame? Well, oil, gas, and mining companies want bulldozers on the doorstep of sacred lands. And Zinke and Burgum are ready to hand over the keys.

There are 138 national monuments in this country. Some are massive wilderness areas. Some are single historic buildings.
