John --
When the Big, Beautiful Bill passed the
House and we asked about your thoughts on tackling the national debt,
most responses highlighted the need to both increase revenue and
decrease spending, with the primary debate being how much to
focus on each area. So we dug in, asking you last week about where you
think we should look to increase revenue. This week, we asked about
where to cut spending.
We had our best response rate yet, with
more than 3,000 of you voting in this week's poll!

A substantial plurality of you think that
cutting military and defense spending is the best way to reduce our
national debt. The U.S. spends more on our defense program than any
other country; in fact, more than the next 20 countries combined.
Further, we contribute more to our NATO defense commitment than any
other partner. Our military budget makes up nearly 15% of our yearly
spending.
Interestingly, reducing government
overhead and operating costs, and reducing entitlement spending were
tied, each with a quarter of the votes. Arguments of a specific
implementation aside, it seems as if the goals of DOGE are
something that a good percentage of you believe in. And while
reductions to Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, and SNAP programs
are politically and financially difficult because of the nature of
those programs, many Forwardists see that as necessary towards
long-term fiscal health. We'll be digging into that one in a future
poll to get more specific!
To summarize the comments:
Subsidy & Corporate Tax Break Reform
- While reducing subsidies to businesses was the least selected
option, those who selected it were among the most vocal. Many called
for a change to what some of you referred to as our "corporate
entitlement program." You stated that giving tax breaks to oil and
real estate organizations (the most commonly named) was unnecessary
and wasting our money.
Defense Downsizing
- Many of you called for the downsizing of naval fleets, reduction
of redundancy in equipment, and more efficient investing in drone
technology.
Entitlement Reform
- Some of you called for a reform to Social Security, claiming that
it was poorly managed and costing taxpayers money.
- Others worried about fraud in the system costing taxpayer
dollars.
- As noted, we'll follow up on this one to see which reforms to
these systems are most popular with Forwardists.
