We’re troubled to see ICE and law enforcement trample the rights of protesters demonstrating against the harassment and detention of immigrants. Some of our colleagues and allies are working closely with those who are impacted, and we stand in solidarity with everyone who is protesting against the Trump administration’s inhumane actions.
Friend,
Over the weekend, peaceful protesters in Los Angeles stood up against aggressive ICE raids and faced troubling retaliation from law enforcement. Journalists tasked with covering the protests were met with rubber bullets, tasers and tear gas.[1]
In response, President Trump deployed the National Guard in an alarming display of authoritarian overreach. He has escalated even further by sending hundreds of Marines to L.A. These actions are part of a broader pattern of intimidation and attacks on democratic freedoms.
Attacks on free speech are a threat to democracy for us all. When our ability to speak, protest, access the news and voice dissent face investigations, retaliation or retribution, we don’t have free speech. What we have is a clear violation of protesters’ First Amendment rights — and we’re fighting back in an all-hands-on-deck moment.
Free Press has a strong track record of defending our First Amendment freedoms from attacks from the Trump administration and its enablers in media and tech. Will you make your very first donation? Your gift will help us support our efforts to safeguard free speech.

It may feel like people can’t fight back, but we’re not powerless against these authoritarian power grabs. If we were powerless, authoritarian forces would not try so hard to suppress our voices. Free Press is jumping into action right now to protect free speech and independent journalism by:
* Upholding protest rights by educating community members, distributing our essential "Know Your Rights" guide, and equipping journalists with the resources and legal support they need to document protests safely.
* Confronting misinformation campaigns, holding both media outlets and law enforcement accountable by challenging false narratives and demanding transparency.
* Monitoring another critical threat: a vote in Congress on eliminating funding for public media like NPR and PBS. If this passes in the House, our next major battle will shift swiftly to the Senate.
None of this work is possible without support from people like you. Will you donate to Free Press today to help us defend our First Amendment freedoms?

Thanks for being in this fight with us,
Nora
