Join us in welcoming our 50 newest Michigan State Troopers who graduated from the 148th Trooper Recruit School on May 30.

Recruits received training in patrol techniques, report writing, ethics, cultural diversity and implicit bias, decision making, leadership, first aid, criminal law, crime scene processing, firearms, water safety, defensive tactics and precision driving.
To commemorate their journey, recruits have historically written a letter of reflection that is included in the graduation program. Watch this video [ [link removed] ] to hear excerpts from the 148th Trooper Recruit School’s letter.
We’re actively recruiting for upcoming trooper recruit schools, including the 150th Trooper Recruit School slated to begin January of 2026. Learn more about a career with the MSP! [ [link removed] ]

The Importance of Safe Firearm Storage
Get a lock
Each year in the United States, hundreds of children are accidentally injured and/or killed by firearms that are not properly secured.
June is National Gun Violence Prevention Month, and the Michigan State Police is reminding gun owners that you are legally responsible for ensuring your firearms are stored in a safe manner. Michigan’s Secure Storage Law requires individuals to keep unattended firearms unloaded and locked with a locking device or stored in a locked box or container if it is reasonably known that a minor is likely to be present on the premises.
Safe storage can reduce the risk of both intentional and unintentional injuries and deaths, as well as lower the rates of firearm theft.
Next time you store your firearm, ensure it’s unloaded, locked and kept separate from ammunition.
Prevent Drowning This Summer
As temperatures rise and families head to pools, lakes and beaches, we’re reminding parents to make water safety a top priority.
Did you know drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 years old? Drowning can happen in seconds and is often silent, but it is preventable.
This summer, avoid accidental drowning by following these important water safety tips:
* Always supervise children near water.
* Lifejackets should be used by children for all activities while in and around water.
* Lock or restrict access to pools when not in use. Additionally, remove all toys from the water and deck to avoid attracting children into the pool area unsupervised.
* Consider enrolling your children in swimming lessons.
* When swimming in lakes or rivers, be aware of natural water hazards like strong currents or sudden drop-offs.
If you see someone drowning:
* Call 911 immediately.
* Shout for help.
* Throw a floatation device. Don’t jump in unless you’re trained.
* Begin CPR if the person isn’t breathing once rescued.
Whether you’re a parent, caregiver or neighbor, your awareness can help protect the children in your community.
Organized Retail Crime Targets Businesses
According to the Michigan Attorney General’s Office, Organized Retail Crime (ORC) [ [link removed] ] theft has cost Michigan more than $1 billion. ORC happens when a large, organized group of criminals steal from businesses with the intent to resell the items for financial gain.
Business owners can lower the risk of falling victim to ORC theft by:
* Staying up to date on the latest ORC scams including cash-cash, check fraud, fraudulent food stamp cards and more.
* Being proactive in inspecting credit card points for skimmers and shimmers.
* Installing surveillance cameras at eye level to capture what the person looks like.
* Reporting unauthorized installations to your local police and pause transactions through those devices.
If you believe you are a victim of Organized Retail Crime, contact local law enforcement or the Organized Retail Crime Unit. <

Summer’s 100 Deadliest Days
Summer Safety Showdown
The period from Memorial Day through Labor Day has often been called the “100 Deadliest Days” for teen drivers. During these summer months, statistics show teen traffic fatalities spike by roughly 20 percent.
To support parents in promoting safe driving habits, the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) offers a free parental toolkit [ [link removed] ] filled with a helpful resources.
Additionally, to raise traffic safety awareness, the Michigan OHSP is launching the Summer Safety Showdown, a bracket-type competition, where the public can vote for their favorite traffic safety videos.
Voting begins on the OHSP’s Facebook page [ [link removed] ] on June 12 and runs through August. Be sure to check out the competition and join the effort to keep Michigan’s roads safer this summer.
Leave With A Smile
West Branch Post
On May 28, the MSP West Branch Post held its annual retiree luncheon. It was a great turnout; however, one special guest was unable to attend—D/Sgt. John Voss, ret., who is believed to be the department’s most senior retiree at 99 years old. Voss joined the Michigan State Police in 1950 as part of the 32nd Trooper Recruit School. In recognition of his service and in lieu of his attendance at the luncheon, F/Lt. Mike Brown and Tpr. Shane Noble visited him at his retirement home to personally present him with a certificate signed by many current members and challenge coin.
