When you’re talking about any political issue — whether it’s about immigration
or foreign policy or anything else — one of the hardest things to do is step
back and recognize how the debate has been framed. This is the part of the
conversation that takes place before you get involved. The Overton Window is
set. Mainstream national news sources, politicians and various activist groups
all work together to set the acceptable boundaries of dialogue. And they’re
very good at it. You often don’t even realize what they’re doing. Or at least,
you often don’t realize what they’re doing until some kind of catastrophic
event takes place — the kind of event that makes their manipulation too obvious
to ignore.
