Fantastic protest at Devonport – this is just the beginning
Thank you to everyone who joined us last Saturday for a vibrant protest through Plymouth against Britain's nuclear weapons. You can see some videos from the day here. This is just the beginning of rebuilding a strong campaign against the toxic nuclear dockyard.
Plymouth shows the grim reality of a community dominated by the arms industry, with toxic radioactive leaks and high levels of poverty. The local hospital and university of both facing severe staff cuts. Instead of pouring billions into deadly nuclear weapons, the government should spend it on rebuilding public services, and jobs diversification programmes. Investment in areas like Devonport could develop the coastline for construction of sustainable wind and wave electricity generators. This would create highly skilled, decent jobs that don’t threaten people or planet. If you live in the South West and want to get involved in this campaign, please email [email protected].
The Alternative Defence Review – a report that presents an alternative security strategy – is getting lots of interest. It’s been sent to cabinet members, select committee members, journalists, academics and campaigners. It argues that Britain needs to build genuine peace and jobs that ensure prosperity for all.
