Email from Judy Chu The ICE raids in Los Angeles this past weekend were indefensible and wrong. Dear John, The ICE raids in Los Angeles this past weekend were indefensible and wrong. Then the Trump Administration made the situation even worse, escalating tensions by sending in the National Guard. This escalation perpetuated violence as they detained and arrested dozens of Californians. The immigrant communities in this country are under attack, and California is no different. But these immigrant communities bring vibrancy and diversity to our state—and they shouldn’t be persecuted for their ethnicities or the colors of their skin. On top of sending masked ICE agents to people’s places of work and dispatching the National Guard to LA, Donald Trump has activated the Marine Corps to Los Angeles. Trump even threatened to have Governor Newsom arrested. These violent acts are not the actions of a president trying to restore law and order, or keep our streets safe. They are the actions of an authoritarian seeking to punish a state he disagrees with. Freedom of speech and individual rights define what it is to be an American. Californians and people across the country are speaking out against the administration that has attacked our communities, our livelihoods, our healthcare and our democracy. That is our right. As a member of Congress, I have a legal right to conduct oversight at ICE facilities, which is exactly what I did this past weekend to see the condition of all who had been swept up and detained. But I was met with a door in my face. Not only is the president using violence and intimidation tactics to fuel his anti-immigrant agenda, but he is illegally barring Congressional oversight in his detention centers. For the immigrants in my district, it is vital you know your rights when it comes to ICE. For my constituents and other Angelenos, I’m gratified at your support for our immigrant neighbors and your willingness to stand with them. I am calling for the immediate release of all detained during these violent raids. I stand with you, Los Angeles, and I will continue fighting for you and all immigrants and allies across the country in Congress. We can’t let Trump destroy what truly makes America great.
