Dear John,
The sad reality is that in Maine you need a car to get anywhere. Our state transportation system still prioritizes moving cars over getting people where they need to go. It's costing families money and, tragically, even people's lives.
You may recall from earlier this year, Portland saw 6 tragic pedestrian deaths before we even reached the month of March. And, this wasn't an anomaly: traffic fatalities in Maine, including pedestrian deaths, notched a 15-year-high in 2022, with 181 deaths. To make matters worse, working families are hurting financially from this too. Each year, they spend on average over $12,000 just to own and operate a vehicle.
Amidst these unfortunate realities, there is good news. As soon as this week, the Maine Legislature will be voting on LD 1138, a bill that would expand and create safer transportation choices for Mainers. Can we count on you to send a message today to urge your legislators to vote YES on LD 1138?
