Why is it that authorities can make someone worse off—for example, via wealth confiscation, regulatory interference, civil asset forfeiture, or the prosecution of victimless crimes—while citizens are held to a far stricter set of standards?
In some ways, psychiatry operates as a de facto arm of the state. Psychiatrists can determine if a person is a danger to themselves or others and incarcerate them in a mental health facility based on that determination. In some instances, they can do this without the patient’s consent.
Rand championed wealth earned through innovation and voluntary trade, not inherited privilege or government redistribution. In her view, money represented moral worth—the tangible result of one’s rational effort and value creation.
