Roee and Adiel are like many of you. They are loving partners and proud parents. They got married in 2013 in California, where Roee grew up. In 2016, they welcomed their first child, Lev, into their lives. He was born via surrogacy in Canada and was rightfully recognized as a U.S. citizen from birth. But three years later, when they had their daughter Kessem via surrogacy in Canada, things took a shocking turn.
The couple applied for Kessem's U.S. passport and were told by a U.S. State Department employee that she would treat baby Kessem as “born out of wedlock.” Kessem was forced to enter the U.S. on a short-term Canadian tourist visa. That is, until we stepped in. Today, a federal judge recognized what Roee and Adiel knew all along: that Kessem has been a U.S. citizen since the day she was born—just like her older brother.
Although we are certainly celebrating, we’re also staying vigilant. The Trump Administration has pushed back on our progress every step of the way. But because of your generosity, we will keep fighting to take down the U.S. State Department’s unconstitutional policy. Please donate today in support of LGBTQ families.
