“White House Pushes Texas to Redistrict, Hoping to Blunt Democratic Gains” John, the New York Times just reported that Donald Trump is actively pressuring Texas lawmakers to redraw its congressional map mid-decade in order to get an upper hand in the midterm elections. They want a “ruthless” gerrymander that they hope might pick up four or five more seats for Republicans in the House. Trump and his allies clearly don’t think they can win fairly, so they’re breaking out every tool in the autocracy playbook to try to cheat instead.
Texas’s congressional map is already being sued for violating the Voting Rights Act — and now Trump wants Republicans to try to gerrymander it even more. It doesn’t stop in Texas, either: Just a few states away in Ohio, Republicans there are gearing up to redraw their map. They have a history of trying to pack the state’s Democratic voters into a small number of districts, and some in their party see this as an opportunity to gain up to three additional congressional seats. Now, Trump himself is wading in to put pressure on Texas. The Republican strategy for the midterms is built on undermining fair representation. Republicans’ attempts to gerrymander maps show anything but strength — they show weakness, and a blatant disregard for American democracy and fair and free elections as we know it.
