Citizens for Ethics & Responsibility in Washington

John,

On his first day in office, President Trump granted clemency to every person charged or sentenced for their role in attacking the Capitol on January 6th, 2021.

Since then, at least 10 of these pardoned insurrectionists have been rearrested, charged or sentenced for other crimes.

These crimes range from plotting the murder of FBI agents to child sexual assault to reckless homicide while driving drunk — and they underscore the public safety threats posed by the pardoned insurrectionists.

While Trump wiped away the charges and convictions for insurrectionists’ participation on January 6th, some remain in custody for their previous crimes.

Like Theodore Middendorf, who pleaded guilty to destruction of government property on January 6th, remains in prison after being sentenced in 2024 for sexually assaulting a seven year old.

However, in two cases, the insurrectionists committed their crimes after receiving their pardons.

Brent John Holdridge was arrested in May and charged with burglary, grand theft, and possession of stolen property for allegedly stealing tens of thousands of dollars worth of industrial copper wire. He previously pleaded guilty to parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building on January 6th.

And Zachary Alam, who was sentenced to eight years in prison for his role in the insurrection, was rearrested in May for an alleged home invasion and theft.

In another case, a pardoned rioter was killed during a traffic stop when he reportedly resisted arrest and was armed.

John, these incidents demonstrate the real threat these insurrectionists pose to the American people's public safety.

Commuting the sentences of those charged with or convicted of violent offenses also shows disrespect for law enforcement officers who risked and in some cases gave their lives to defend our democracy.
