Dear John --
Last weekend’s SOUL TALK, hosted with the California Democratic Party (CDP) African American caucus and attended by leaders, organizers, and community members from across California, was truly honest, genuine and at times, heartbreaking.
Over the course of the two hours, we listened, learned, chatted, and celebrated the Black leaders across our state who are on the frontlines of the fight against systemic racism, police brutality, and a never-ending stream of tragedy.
Filmmakers, organizers, psychologists, lawmakers and elected officials all shared their reactions to the killing of George Floyd and to this moment in history.
It was a powerful discussion, and we’ll be having more of them in the coming months, alongside a commitment to further integrating racial justice and anti-racism into every element of the California Democratic Party.
Our records show that you missed the SOUL TALK event, but we’ve got plenty of action items to keep you in the loop on our work:
- Join an upcoming training or community gathering. Save the date for our SOUL TALK 2 in July, circle your calendar for a July 24th training extravaganza, and in the meanwhile, check out our upcoming events.
- Support bills and efforts that promote racial justice like ACA 5, which opens the door to reinstating affirmative action in California, ACA 6, which will give those on parole a vote, and AB 3121, which will start a critical conversation on reparations in California.
- Be more than an ally - be an advocate and make sure your friends vote in November. Check in with three friends to ensure they’re registered and have a plan to vote this November. http://vote.org/
Last Saturday’s SOUL TALK was just the beginning of our commitment to listen, learn and grow as a party.
We’ll be following up with much more soon.
Thank you,
The California Democratic Party
