"“Nothing counts but pressure, pressure, more pressure, and still more pressure through broad organized aggressive mass action."

Good afternoon, everyone. It's taken us a few days to recover from one of the hardest weekends we've faced as a city and as a people. For a lot of black folks, the Rayshard Brooks murder was another drop in a bucket that spilled over years ago.
The good news is that we can be the generation that puts this unjust and unaccountable system of policing into the history books. I'm proud to let y'all know that MADSA haven't been polite bystanders to history this week: we've been organizing on the streets, educating the public, and fighting in the halls of power.
We have been active, visible, and vocal in a way the entire country can emulate:

MADSA's Defund And Abolish Police Event Saturday.
About 150 people showed up to listen as we talked about police abolition: we talked about the history, the urgency, discussed common objections, and gave people concrete actions they could take at a local and state level, along with specific calls to action for women and transgender people whose needs often get ignored in activist circles.
Our attendees didn't just listen, they participated and shared their own stories in smaller breakout groups.
We're making activists across this city, people who are better prepared to talk to friends, relatives and co-workers about abolition.

MADSA Day Of Budget ACTION On Monday.
This week, MADSA turned out in a show of force at the Georgia Capitol, Atlanta City Hall, and the Fulton County Government Building.
Atlanta and Fulton are spending hundreds of millions of dollars on a police force and “justice” system that do more to oppress Black people than keep anyone safe.
Councilwoman Jennifer Ide introduced legislation holding back 50% of APD’s budget until a review is complete of practices & recommendations to transform Atlanta’s approach to public safety. This is not the end of the fight for a more just Atlanta, but only the beginning.
We also called dozens of state legislators and FLODDED THEIR LINES OFF THE HOOK to oppose the draconian budget cuts that the legislature is considering.

Would You Like Us To Do More Events Like This?
|
If you personally think it's cool that people of color in the chapter are organizing explicitly socialist responses to our current crisis - and leading a vocal alternative to the limp reforms being offered by the Mayor's office - help us buy equipment and materials so we can spread the word.
|
None of this is possible without you. There are a lot of chapters that are meeting this moment by circulating petitions and asking for retweets.
All of that is good, but your support meant that during a national crisis, MADSA could do more - we could gather coalitions, educate Atlantans, and confront power directly.
It cost us a couple hundred bucks to do this abolition demonstration, we were able to borrow materials from coalition partners. If we raise $600 or so, we can get our own audio equipment and other BIPOC organizers can come to us for support. Sound good?

How Can You Participate?
Please join us June 20 at noon for a one hour virtual (online) session on the current moment and the protest response put on by Metro Atlanta DSA. This session will let members know ways to participate in the ongoing protests for Black Lives and police accountability. Please attend if you are taking part in the protests or would like to become involved.
We will be covering: - BLM and DSA - How to be part of protests - Protest resources - Other ways to help

Monday Is A Big Day.
Just Transition for Georgia is meeting at 7PM. The NAACP dropped an snapshot of energy justice that was very inpsiring and we're going to be talking about specific strategies for building a democratic energy system.
We're reading "Are Prisons Obsolete?" by Angela Davis on June 27th. To keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 pandemic we’ll continue to meet online via Zoom.

LOCAL. ELECTIONS. STILL. MATTER. The Local Electoral WG is going to meet and decompress after one of the most dramatic primaries in the history of the state. They'll be looking at making endorsements and statements of support for the fall.
Tamara Johnson-Shealey is going to drop by to discuss her campaign for US Senate as well, and if you've never heard her or heard of her, she is worth the time.
