“Water is rising, so are we” is 350Brooklyn’s theme for this year’s Coney Island Mermaid Parade. We’ll draw the connection between burning fossil fuels and the floods and storms hitting New York hard. And we’ll share resources for protecting our homes and neighborhoods from flooding. Grim news: Williams is back
Long-time 350BK members will recall that between 2017 and 2020 we fought to stop a huge fracked gas pipeline from being built in the waters off our shores. Called the Williams NESE pipeline, it would have been phenomenally expensive, utterly unnecessary, and would have churned industrial toxins long buried in our seabed up into our waters. Along with many allies, we convinced NYS to deny Williams the required state permits. It was a significant victory. But the current White House is determined to expand fossil fuels at any cost. So Williams is back, expecting to be able to ram this through. Will we let them? Hell, no. Interested in helping? Email [email protected].

Basement Flooding Interviews for the Center for the Study of Brooklyn at Brooklyn College
The Center for the Study of Brooklyn at Brooklyn College is currently conducting research on homeowners and renters who have experienced basement flooding in Brooklyn and Queens, as a result of heavy rainfall during storm surges such as Hurricane Sandy and Ida. Interviewees will be given $40 for their participation, and their information will be kept confidential. Interested? Fill out a short pre-interview questionnaire to get started.

People vs. Fossil Fuels/350BK is an action focused-group that works with the national PvFF coalition calling on President Biden to declare a climate emergency, stop approving fossil fuel leases and exports, and support the work of frontline communities across the country. Plastic Free works to eliminate plastic pollution and reduce reliance on single-use plastic products. We meet monthly via Zoom, and work on a variety of projects including legislative lobbying efforts, campaigns promoting going plastic free, and neighborhood efforts to reduce waste. Renewable Brooklyn College is part of the citywide movement to decarbonize CUNY campuses. 350Brooklyn is working with faculty and staff to turn Brooklyn College into a renewable hub that can help relieve the area’s overstressed grid while serving as a local pilot project for making the transition from fossil fuels to renewables.
