John: Today marks five years since a white supremacist walked into Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church — a historically Black church in Charleston, SC — and opened fire on a Bible study group. When the massacre was over, he had murdered nine Black worshippers.
This we know: White supremacy kills. And it is made all the more deadly by our nation's weak and broken gun laws.
Yet for the past four years, President Trump has done nothing but worsen the deadly nexus of racism, guns, and hate. He has called white supremacists "very fine people." He has threatened gun violence against Black Lives Matter protesters, while showering them with tear gas and rubber bullets.
And he has encouraged Mitch McConnell to block EVERY single common-sense gun bill passed through the House of Representatives — including a bipartisan bill that would prevent tragedies like the Charleston shooting. That such bill was passed in the House 475 days ago and remains blocked by Trump and McConnell.
We’re at an inflection point, we need to act IMMEDIATELY to respond to this. We can make change in November – but we’re 17 responses short of statistical significance in your area. And we can’t keep this poll open past midnight, so please tell us now:
