Friend,
Our elections are supposed to be one person, one vote. But when super PACs backed by billionaires are able to skirt contribution limits and spend unlimited sums to influence races―it raises the question, who are the candidates they’re supporting beholden too? Working people or their billionaire backers?
In just the last three election cycles, one Crypto-backed super PAC―Fairshake PAC―has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in our elections and is now the second largest super PAC in politics, ahead of any Democratic super PAC.
Half of Fairshake PAC’s money comes from crypto corporations and the other half comes directly from its billionaire owners. And while crypto bros supported Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, this did not stop crypto-backed super PACs from meddling in Democratic primaries, helping defeat progressive Democrats including Katie Porter (D-CA), Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), and Cori Bush (D-MO).
According to a report titled Billionaires Buying Elections: They’ve Come to Collect, which shows how just 100 billionaire families spent a record $2.6 billion to influence the 2024 election, “Billionaires who aspire to oligarch status fully maximize their power through so-called super PACs, which thanks to the 2010 Citizens United Supreme Court decision can raise unlimited amounts from each donor.”
State Democratic Parties have the authority and responsibility to regulate their primaries and nominating processes. If we want politicians who serve the people, we need state parties to rein in super PAC spending that lets billionaires pick candidates.
State Democratic Parties must ensure that candidates in its primaries are not benefited by, dependent on, or elected due to electioneering spending by Big Money donors who use super PACs to direct money to campaigns well beyond federal contribution limits.
Add your name to tell all 50 State Democratic Parties to introduce and pass resolutions banning super PACs―and their billionaire and corporate backers―from influencing Democratic primaries.
