The Gai Gherardi Fellowship
On March 14th, 2025, we lost our dearest friend, advisor, and confidante, Gai Gherardi. A thirty-plus-year Board member and Board President at the time of her passing, Gai was a gentle yet powerful force in the life of Art Matters.

As we grieve her loss—and celebrate her extraordinary life—we share with you remembrances of Gai ([link removed]) from our staff and Board, along with her obituaries in INVISION Magazine ([link removed]) and the New York Times. ([link removed])

Gai was someone who eschewed labels and categories, embracing the wayward, playful, surprising, and mysterious. She was a fierce advocate for artists and their work, celebrating “everything from the sublime to the ridiculous,” as she put it.

In that spirit, Art Matters is proud to announce the inaugural Gai Gherardi Fellowship. ([link removed]) This award will recognize an artist working with a unique vision, in honor of the visionary eyewear creator who loved a good pun and imbued humor and grace in everything she touched.
