As Riots Spread, Marine Battalion Sent to LA
To protect federal government staff and assets. Military News: A battalion of active-duty Marines — around 700 troops — based out of Twentynine Palms, California, received deployment orders to Los Angeles on Monday after President Donald Trump’s commandeering and deployment of the state’s National Guard troops to the city over the weekend, defense officials confirmed to Military.com on Monday…. Two defense officials told Military.com that the Insurrection Act, a law that could expand the president’s ability to wield the military within the U.S., had not been invoked by Monday afternoon ( Military). The mission: … protect federal buildings and personnel in the wake of protests over immigration that have already led President Trump to federalize National Guard troops, the U.S. military said Monday. The troops … won’t engage with protesters, U.S. Northern Command, which is responsible for U.S. military operations in North America, said in a statement…. The last time Marines deployed to quell civil unrest was during the 1992 Los Angeles riots, which erupted after four police officers were acquitted in the beating of Rodney King ( Wall Street Journal). Additionally, from Sean Parnell, Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs: At the order of the President, the Department of Defense is mobilizing an additional 2,000 California National Guard to be called into federal service to support ICE & to enable federal law-enforcement officers to safely conduct their duties ( Parnell).

Newsom’s Non-Cooperation With Federal Law Enforcement Puts Californians at Risk
And none more than the first responders who Newsom and Mayor Bass are using as the buffers between the mayhem and the citizenry. Stephen Miller: California is the largest sanctuary state in America. The state has ordered every police department and sheriffs office in the state not to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement, even if they have committed grievous crimes. Illegals are given free welfare, healthcare and every other conceivable state benefit. They are made immune in every way. Simply put, the government of the State of California aided, abetted and conspired to facilitate the invasion of the United States ( Miller).

Following the Money on the Violent Protests
Laura Powell: The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights—CHIRLA—is one of the key players in fomenting the violent response to immigration enforcement actions. It’s an LA-based nonprofit with a history of taking radical positions on immigration; for example, it led a 2018 campaign to abolish ICE. It currently leads the Los Angeles Rapid Response Network, which gathers intel about enforcement actions and deploys activists to respond. CHIRLA has strong ties to the Democrat Party in California and has supported the election of Democratic candidates through its lobbying arm. It has a particularly close relationship with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass ( Powell). Jennifer Van Laar: Yes, there’s government money going into the org; that’s not startling. What is startling is the amount. According to a financial audit submitted to the State of California, for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2023, CHIRLA took in $34 million from various government contracts, and 96 percent of the government funding was from the State of California. That amount is nearly three times the prior year’s government contract total. CHIRLA’s total revenue for the year ending June 30, 2023, was $45 million, meaning that 75.5 percent of its revenue came from government contracts ( Red State). Jennifer Van Laar with more of the receipts on CHIRLA and their Executive Director Salas: On Friday Salas was flanked by four LA City Council members, a CA State Assemblymember, a CA State Senator, and more… ( Van Laar).

Newsom Angry at Trump’s “Chaos”
More from the California Governor: Continued chaotic federal sweeps, across California, to meet an arbitrary arrest quota are as reckless as they are cruel. Donald Trump’s chaos is eroding trust ( X). Victor Davis Hanson: Dissect that statement, and almost everything Newsom said was either not factual or misleading. “Chaotic?” What is chaotic is allowing 12 million unaudited migrants into the U.S. ahead of those waiting years for background checks and legal permission. The current antidote to a truly chaotic, nonexistent border was to bring some legality and order back to immigration—and not to perpetuate a wild-west border, drug smuggling, cartel profiteering, and child trafficking and abandonment, which were the Biden-era norms. Chaotic is 1,000 rioters in southern California swarming ICE officers, endangering their safety and lives—and then being contextualized, excused, or even supported by the governor of the state, who supposedly is an upholder of our laws and their enforcement ( AMGreatness). Newsom’s not angry at the violent, life-threatening actions being taken against our first responders. He’s not angry at a city up in flames on his watch. He’s just angry at Trump for seeking to restore order. Cal Matters: Newsom has rallied Californians and his liberal base with his open defiance, even sending a fundraising email Sunday morning about the National Guard deployment. The posturing nevertheless puts both the governor and his state at increasing risk of reprisal. Matt Rodriguez, a longtime Democratic consultant who has worked in state and national politics, said it’s tough to challenge the president, because he holds most of the cards and has a tendency to whack back twice as hard. “I just haven’t seen someone come out aggressive against Trump where it works,” Rodriguez said. “It’s a little bit like getting into a brick fight with the owner of the brickyard” ( Cal Matters).

Hard Left Planning for Further Protests
On June 14, the administration has a flag day celebration planned commemorating the U.S. Army’s 250 th anniversary: The parade, which will feature Army equipment, flyovers, musical performances and thousands of soldiers in uniforms from the past and the present, caps off a week of programming designed to celebrate the country’s military might ( USA Today). The hard left is planning—essentially—to sabotage this patriotic celebration: Protestors are taking to the streets and community hubs nationwide on June 14 in what organizers expect will be the largest single-day anti-President Trump rally since the start of the administration. The widespread movement will run counter to Trump’s multimillion dollar military parade in D.C. “No Kings is a nationwide day of defiance,” organizers wrote. “From city blocks to small towns, from courthouse steps to community parks, we’re taking action to reject authoritarianism.” More than 100 pro-democracy advocacy groups are partnering to organize the No Kings events ( Axios). Their site: ( No Kings). Given the violence we’ve seen these last few days, there is ample cause for concern.

Watch the Remittances
In the big, beautiful bill. The remittances are the monies that immigrant communities send home. Nestled within the current legislation is a 3.5% tax on remittances. NY Post: Over the weekend, footage of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum blasting the planned tax during a speech last month went viral. “If necessary, we’ll mobilize. We don’t want taxes on remittances from our fellow countrymen. From the US to Mexico,” Sheinbaum warned in the clip ( NYPost). After the clip from the president of Mexico, Chip Roy commented: New reason to amend the Senate bill to tax remittances at a lot higher rate… ( Roy). And, Missouri Senator Eric Schmitt: The House’s Big Beautiful Bill addressed the urgent need for a remittance tax. But we can go further. I’m introducing legislation to quadruple the proposed remittance tax — from 3.5% to 15%. America is not the world’s piggy bank. And we don’t take kindly to threats ( Schmitt). Ed Morrissey: This is not a piddling issue to Mexico. In 2023, Mexico received $63.3 billion in remittances from the US, then a record. Remittances in 2023 accounted for 3.5% of Mexico’s $1.79 trillion GDP that year, in fact. Mexico got $59.5 billion in the first eleven months of 2024, a 2.9% increase from the year before, likely on the way to a new record. The record levels of remittances probably relate to the vast expansion of illegal border crossings in 2021-2025, which is one reason why Sheinbaum opposes the new policies by Donald Trump to shut down the border and enforce immigration laws. The new remittance tax is going to create problems for Sheinbaum. Even at 3.5%, the tax would shave off $2.2 billion at the 2023 level of remittances. That will have some small impact on the Mexican economy, but a 15% tax rate pushes the haircut to $9.5 billion ( Hot Air).

A Fresh Start: RFK Jr. Cleans House at the CDC
Removing all 17 members of the agency’s advisory panel on vaccines. The panel was widely viewed as unduly influenced by if not owned by Big Pharma. From HHS: “Today we are prioritizing the restoration of public trust above any specific pro- or anti-vaccine agenda,” Secretary Kennedy said. “The public must know that unbiased science—evaluated through a transparent process and insulated from conflicts of interest—guides the recommendations of our health agencies … A clean sweep is necessary to reestablish public confidence in vaccine science,” Kennedy concluded. “ACIP’s new members will prioritize public health and evidence-based medicine. The Committee will no longer function as a rubber stamp for industry profit-taking agendas. The entire world once looked to American health regulators for guidance, inspiration, scientific impartiality, and unimpeachable integrity. Public trust has eroded. Only through radical transparency and gold standard science, will we earn it back” ( HHS). More from RFK, Jr.: In 2000 the House issued the results of an investigation of ACIP and another vaccine advisory committee under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration—the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee. It found that enforcement of its conflict-of-interest rules was weak to nonexistent. Committee members regularly participated in deliberations and advocated products in which they had a financial stake ( Wall Street Journal).

FBI Arrests Chinese National on Charges of Smuggling Biological Materials to US
FBI Director Patel: Yesterday, @FBIDetroit arrested a second Chinese national on charges of smuggling biological materials into the U.S. and lying to federal agents. This individual is Chengxuan Han, a citizen of the People’s Republic of China and a Ph.D. student in Wuhan, China. Han is the third PRC connected individual charged on similar allegations in recent days. Han is alleged to have sent four packages to the U.S. from China containing a biological material related to round worms…. In a follow up interview with FBI and ICE HSI agents, Han admitted to sending the packages and lying about their contents ( FBI Director). Detroit News: Han was charged one week after investigators arrested a UM scholar from China on charges she tried to smuggle a biological pathogen into the U.S., characterized as a potential agricultural terrorism weapon that can be used for targeting food crops. The FBI counterintelligence case against UM scholar Yunqing Jian, 33, and her boyfriend, 34-year-old Zunyong Liu, involves allegations that Jian received money from a Chinese foundation funded largely by the Chinese government to conduct post-doctoral work. That includes research on a fungus known as Fusarium graminearum, a biological pathogen that can cause devastating diseases in crops. Jian is being held without bond while awaiting a detention hearing Friday in federal court in Detroit. Liu has returned to China ( Detroit).

Trump, Netanyahu Discuss Iran; “Very dire”
As the mullahs delay, discuss, deceive, repeat. Shirit Avitan Cohen: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke Monday evening with US President Donald Trump about the Iranian issue…. Since the talks began, Israel has been closely monitoring the nuclear talks between Washington and Tehran, while maintaining a separate dialogue with the Trump administration. The US has issued a warning to Israel not to strike Iran during the ongoing discussions. The nuclear talks between the US and Iran, held in recent months, have recently reached a crisis point that could lead to their collapse. Israel Hayom). Trump on a deal: They’re not there. I hate to say that, because the situation is very, very dire one ( Open Source)

Islam: World’s Fastest Growing Religion
New data from Pew, looking at our shifting religious landscape from 2010 to 2020. Pew: Muslims were the fastest-growing religious group over the decade. The number of Muslims increased by 347 million – more than all other religions combined. The share of the world’s population that is Muslim rose by 1.8 points, to 25.6%. For the U.S., the most notable spike is that of the “nones”: The United States, as of 2020, is the country with the world’s second-largest number of religiously unaffiliated people (after China), surpassing Japan. The U.S. had roughly 101 million religious “nones” in 2020 (up 97% from a decade earlier), while Japan had 73 million (up 8%). However, the unaffiliated category continues to account for a much larger share of the total population in Japan – 57% of all Japanese are religiously unaffiliated – than in the U.S., where 30% identify as atheist, agnostic or “nothing in particular.” Also the global numbers on Christianity are sobering: Christians have experienced the biggest net losses from switching (3.1 have left for every 1.0 who has joined). Most former Christians no longer identify with any religion, but some now identify with a different religion ( Pew).
