Dear John,
Black lives matter. Over the space of just a few days, the racist murders of George Floyd, Breonna Tayor, Tony McDade and Ahmaud Arbery broke the news, sparking nationwide protests against the racism and police brutality which continually targets the Black community. We have watched with sadness, frustration and admiration as protestors have braved state violence and a pandemic to demand justice and systemic change during this critical moment in civil rights history.
We want to listen and act intentionally. On 06/22, NIAC will host a panel discussing the Black Lives Matter movement and the perpetual structures which affect Black American lives. We will also consider the impact of whiteness within our community and the experiences of Black Iranian Americans.

Ensuring Black Lives Matter: Learning about the Movement

As an organization, our expertise often lies in federal domestic and foreign policy which impacts Iranian Americans and Iranian immigrants, however we recognize the relationship between this administration’s militarized approach to foreign affairs and the militarized silencing of peaceful protestors.
How has systemic racism shaped the Black American lives? What are movement leaders demanding at this time? How does the U.S’s militaristic approach to global “safety” connect our experiences? How can we take steps to ensure that Black lives DO matter in the U.S?
