Friend,
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released the full Fiscal Year 2026 budget proposal—confirming what was initially reported in a leaked draft earlier this year. The federal government is officially proposing to eliminate all funding for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline’s LGBTQ+ Youth Specialized Services.
This program, signed into law with bipartisan support during President Trump’s first term and implemented in 2022, has facilitated over 1.3 million life-saving crisis conversations with LGBTQ+ young people in moments of profound need. Under the current proposal, these specialized services would disappear as soon as October 1, 2025.
The Trevor Project is deeply concerned about the impact this decision would have on LGBTQ+ youth across the country. We are working diligently to raise awareness, mobilize support, and do everything in our power to protect this essential lifeline.
You can read more about what this means and what we know so far in our latest press release update.
