John,
As millions of Palestinians, including children and infants, face starvation and man-made famine in Gaza while the Israeli government continues to block aid, a group of unarmed activists known as the Freedom Flotilla Coalition bravely tried to sail to Gaza on a humanitarian mission to deliver baby formula, food, and medical supplies to Palestinians.
But last night, the Freedom Flotilla’s ship, the Madleen, was attacked and intercepted by Israeli forces.
Among those on board were Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and French member of the European Parliament Rima Hassan, both of whom were detained. Israeli authorities now say they plan to show the activists footage of October 7 before deporting them, an act meant to intimidate, deflect, and justify violence, rather than address the humanitarian crisis at hand.
Israel does not have the legal authority to detain civilians in international waters.
Once again, Israeli officials have acted with total impunity just to stop desperately needed food and supplies from reaching Palestinians — a war crime.
Israel is breaking international law by starving millions of Palestinian civilians and obstructing the delivery of humanitarian aid. The U.S. cannot continue to supply Israel with weapons and enable its genocide — It’s beyond time for Congress to act.
In solidarity,
Justice Democrats
