Because of Gerry’s passing, the 11th Congressional District needs hundreds of volunteers to help run a well-organized Special Democratic Primary on Saturday, June 28.

Gerry cared deeply about democracy — not just around the world, but right here at home. In 2012, when voters in Prince William County faced four-hour lines at the polls, Gerry went to see it for himself and demanded that the county get more voting machines to the polls. Then he held hearings in Congress to get to the bottom of what went wrong — because no voter should ever be turned away or silenced by disorganization or neglect.

This June 28, we have a chance to carry that commitment forward.

If you can spare just a few hours to help staff a polling site — as a volunteer, a ballot counter, a hotline responder, or more — you’ll be playing a direct role in upholding the democracy Gerry dedicated his life to protecting. [[link removed]]

Gerry Connolly proudly served as the Democratic representative for Virginia’s 11th District and as Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee. A lifelong public servant, he championed Northern Virginia’s economy, public education, Social Security, Medicare, and the defense of democracy. Gerry previously led as Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and was known for his deep commitment to community and country.
He passed away on May 21, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer and is survived by his beloved wife, Smitty, and their daughter, Caitlin. Before his passing, Gerry formally endorsed his longtime advisor, former Chief of Staff and current Fairfax County Supervisor James Walkinshaw, to succeed him in Congress and continue the work they began together.
