![]() You’ve probably heard that the GOP’s so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” includes the largest cuts to Medicaid and food assistance in American history. But buried deep in Section 70302 of their thousand-page legislation, MAGA Republicans have snuck through one of the most dangerous, most aggressive attacks on the rule of law I’ve ever seen.
Section 70302 is just a single paragraph. But if it’s passed, Donald Trump would have the power to treat the Constitution as a mere suggestion, instead of the law. Let me explain: Under this provision, anyone who sues the federal government would be required to pay a bond — likely an enormous amount — before federal courts can hold government officials like Trump in contempt when they break the law. That means the authority of the courts to hold Trump accountable for unlawful acts through fines or even jail time would be completely diminished. In effect, Trump would have the power to simply ignore any court rulings he disagrees with and face no consequences! Right now, if you or I violated a court order, we would be held in contempt. Because the law means nothing without enforcement. But now, Trump and his MAGA allies are doing everything they can to consolidate power in the executive branch and place themselves above the law. They must be stopped.
Thank you for taking action. Dave |
