![]() There is no shortage of appalling, outrageous policies in the GOP’s thousand-page budget reconciliation bill. But buried deep in Section 70302, Republicans snuck through a deeply troubling, mostly unnoticed attack on the independence of the federal judiciary. If Republicans get their way, federal courts’ authority to hold government officials like Donald Trump in contempt could be severely restricted — effectively allowing Trump to ignore judges who rule his actions unconstitutional. Without the ability to enforce their rulings through sanctions, fines, or jail time, the authority and power of the federal courts will be completely defanged. That means Donald Trump could be completely shielded from any accountability, even when his administration violates the law. Make no mistake: Trump will continue to break the law. In just a few short months, courts have ruled against his administration over 170 times! But if this provision goes into effect, those rulings would become immediately unenforceable. This is an existential threat to the rule of law, period. Without a functional judicial branch, Trump could be given free rein to violate the law at will, consolidate unprecedented power in the executive branch, and make our government less democratic and less free.
This is a critical moment for our democracy, so thank you in advance for taking action. Brittany |
