Friends -
I held a town hall in Lansing this weekend with my friend, Representative Kristen McDonald Rivet. Hundreds of Michiganders packed a high school gym to do that most American of things: stand up and ask their elected representatives questions about what’s happening in Congress.
Almost every question I received expressed a sense of concern about President Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” – and what's going to happen with health care, the price of food, nutrition assistance and programs millions of people care about. People just wanted to know, “are we going to be ok?”
Maybe you share that sense of concern.
So first, I want to be very clear about what President Trump and Republicans' bill does:
This bill cuts a bunch of programs that we all care about – particularly health care – to pay for permanent tax cuts for the wealthiest tax brackets.
That is not a political statement – that is just what the bill does.
You can't give big tax breaks if you're not cutting something big.
And second, I want to be clear that this bill will impact EVERYONE's health care. Either you are going to be at risk of losing your health care or paying more for your health care.
Think about it.
If you're cutting a bunch of people off health care, they are still walking into the emergency room and needing care.
And the response to that, when they can't pay, is that health care providers pass on that cost by charging more to those with private insurance.
This is a health care conversation. Because what President Trump couldn’t do in this first term – repealing Obamacare – he is trying to do this time with a thousand cuts.
No one wants to feel fearful about how government decisions are going to impact their lives. But that is where we are, and it’s critical all Americans know the facts of this bill.
