We want to tell you about a STUNNING provision hidden in the House’s budget bill that is a dangerous threat to the separation of powers. If passed, it would limit federal courts' ability to enforce contempt orders, and therefore to uphold the rule of law.

That means if a government official, like Donald Trump or members of his administration, violate a court order, judges would lose a key tool to hold them accountable.

This is a direct threat to our system of checks and balances.

Our democracy depends on three co-equal branches of government, but this threatens the judiciary’s ability to enforce the law. To allow this provision to be made into law would effectively allow the executive branch to be unaccountable to the law — and let the president operate like a king. We need to sound the alarm — and fast.

Donald Trump has called himself a king. He has openly defied the law multiple times. And now, his allies are trying to undermine our democratic system with this provision hidden in the budget bill.

This is not a time to sit on the sidelines. We need to take action to make sure the Senate doesn’t allow this provision to pass.

We believe that if senators across the country hear from thousands of constituents, we can stop this provision and protect the foundation of our democracy.
