Edward — Make no mistake, what the Trump administration is doing in response to protests in California and across the country is to escalate tensions, not keep the peace. Trump is playing dictator once again.

And being honest, it’s rich hearing about lawlessness from a President who is constantly breaking the law.

He sends masked men who refuse to identify themselves to pick people up off the street.

He suspends due process, a constitutional right for all, to illegally deport people without evidence of violations of the law or immigration status.

He uses ICE to crackdown on the bedrock principle of free speech and arrest those for having political opinions different than his.

He uses things like tattoos and baseball caps as justification to send people off to a super-prison in El Salvador with no way to return home.

And he has carried out these actions while ignoring court orders meant to reign in his administration.

So here’s my suggestion to Trump: If you want an end to chaos and lawlessness, stop sending ICE into communities to break the law and wreak havoc on Americans.

People have a right to protest against what they rightfully see as a weaponization of our immigration system — but Trump and ICE don’t have the right to constantly stoke fear and escalate tensions to create an excuse to bring in the troops and brutalize our communities.

I have been doing everything I can in the Senate to hold Trump accountable, but I need the help of our movement to continue to keep up the pressure in defense of democracy.

If you can afford to help power our work, use this link or the button below to chip in. It’s going to take action from all of us to oppose authoritarianism.

In solidarity,

Ed Markey
