As Americans from coast to coast demonstrated to demand justice for George
Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and the countless Black lives lost to
police violence, Donald Trump used the National Guard to round up hundreds
of protesters in D.C.
The right to protest is fundamental in American democracy. But many
leaders in D.C. could not stand up for their residents because D.C. lacks
many of the rights and powers that another state would have. Allowing
Trump free reign over almost 700,000 people is unjustifiable.

Statehood. For too long, Republicans in Congress have blocked statehood
for partisan reasons. Now’s the time to ramp up the pressure and force
them to budge.

D.C. residents fulfill all of the other responsibilities of folks with
state representation. They pay federal taxes, they serve on juries, they
sign up for the draft, and they’re affected by the decisions that the
United States Congress makes.
Denying them the ability to have a Senator fighting for them, or a
fully-fledged member of the House is in conflict with our democratic
ideals. Furthermore, it further compounds systemic injustice. A majority
of people who live in D.C. are Black and Brown, making the brunt of this
historic disenfranchisement fall upon the very communities who most need a
voice.
[ [link removed]- ]We have some real momentum here. With over 200 members of the House
cosponsoring the resolution that includes D.C. Statehood, we’re closer
than ever to ending this injustice. Sign your name to join our coalition
today.
