This Carers Week, we recognise the incredible work of carers across the country.

Despite their vital contribution to society, carers are often overlooked, with policies to help them pushed to the bottom of the pile by both the Conservatives and Labour.

That’s why the Liberal Democrats consistently stand up for carers, to give them the recognition, support and rights they deserve.

We’re fighting for a fair deal for family carers so they have the financial and emotional support they need to care for their loved ones while living their own lives to the fullest.

In 2023, Wendy Chamberlain MP’s Carer’s Leave Act became law, giving millions of carers the right to take five days of unpaid leave per year, so they can better balance work and care.

During last year’s General Election campaign, Ed shared more of his own personal story of being a carer, shining a spotlight on caring in the national conversation - something he has continued to do this year, with the publication of his excellent book, “Why I Care, and Why Care Matters”.

Since the election, we’ve been urging the Government to go much further, including a reform of Carer’s Allowance, to stop prosecutions for overpayments, increase the earnings limit, and raise the amount carers can receive.

It’s also time to address the elephant in the room - the crisis in social care.

After years of Conservative broken promises, Labour are now kicking the can down the road themselves. The social care commission must be cross-party and concluded this year, so we can finally deliver the change this country is crying out for.

This Carers Week, let’s all celebrate carers and renew our commitment to fight for them and those they care for.
