THE FORUM DAILY
Federal immigration sweeps in workplaces and other areas of Los Angeles prompted protests over the weekend from frustrated neighbors and advocates, report Frank Stoltze, Megan Garvey and Jared Bennett of LAist [link removed].
With tensions rising, the White House deployed the California National Guard to intervene over the objections of Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass (D). As the president threatened [link removed] [link removed] additional actions overnight, the action has prompted the state of California tothreaten a lawsuit [link removed] challenging the deployment, as reported by Sarah Fortinsky of The Hill [link removed].
The Editorial Board of The Wall Street Journal [link removed] analyzes recent immigration enforcement actions and lays out potential political fallout for both President Trump and Democrats, urging "common sense"to prevail.
Separately, the new travel ban goes into effect today, blocking the entry of nationals from 12 countries and imposing partial restrictions for 7 more. Despite that Democrats and at least one Republican have called the ban "inhumane and unnecessary, "advocates do not expect the same opposition of the 2017 ban during the first Trump administration, report David Nakamura and Marianne LeVine of The Washington Post [link removed].
For one Afghan family settled in the United States, the travel ban means a definite pause on plans to bring a beloved niece to live with them, allowing her to escape the trials of living under Taliban rule, reports Jeffrey Collins of the Associated Press [link removed].
While the ban makes exception for Afghans with Special Immigrant Visas who helped the United States during the conflict in Afghanistan, this does not apply to extended family of those individuals.
