Please Oppose Construction of the George Snyder Trail

Proposed site of the George Snyder Bike Trail, Tom Blackburn

Please sign this petition opposing the construction of the Georg Snyder Trail today!

Despite several years of widespread opposition, it appears that the Fairfax City Council may vote on Tuesday evening to go forward with the construction of the George Snyder Trail. The Trail will cause substantial and irreparable damage to the urban forest in Fairfax City. Two-thirds of the trail will be constructed above or below the existing ground level because the terrain is so steep. It will be constructed on causeways of fill dirt as much as 11 feet high, and on excavations as much as 7 feet below grade. Slopes to integrate the causeways and trenches with the surrounding terrain will be as much as fifty feet wide. 380 feet of the trail will be on boardwalks and 535 feet are on bridges, as the trail crosses through sensitive Resource Protection Areas. Hundreds of trees will be destroyed, and  topsoil will be destroyed everywhere the trail is above or below ground.

The Fairfax City Council will vote on whether to proceed with the trail at a 7 PM meeting on Tuesday, June 10. NVBA will testify in opposition to the trail, but we need your help. The Mayor of Fairfax City has said that the trail has regional significance, so you should sign the petition regardless of whether you live in the city. Please sign the petition as soon as possible, but no later than noon on Tuesday.

If you can, please attend the meeting at 7:00 PM on Tuesday 6/10 at the Fairfax City Hall, 10455 Armstrong Street, Fairfax.
