After serving as the 73rd Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, I have been reflecting on the current affairs of our state, and I have some thoughts:
The people of Virginia deserve better.
In 2020, I signed legislation removing a requirement that forced abortion seekers to undergo a mandatory, medically-unnecessary ultrasound prior to receiving the care they need.
I signed this bill into law with the hope that it would put an end to anti-choice legislators in Richmond telling people what they can and cannot do with their bodies.
Unfortunately, that has not been the case. In Virginia, we watched this year as the GOP once again rejected a commonsense bill that would have protected access to contraception. And we know that more and more states – particularly those that border our Commonwealth – are taking increasingly extreme stances against reproductive rights.
In fact, Virginia is the last Southern state to ensure access to abortion for those who need it – without political, burdensome, and medically-necessary restrictions.
That’s why I am reaching out today. This November, we must work together to defend and expand our majority in the VA House of Delegates, elect Abigail Spanberger to be the first woman Governor of Virginia, and support Democrats up and down the ballot who will protect access to reproductive health care for all.
