UNICEF was established in the aftermath of World War II to help children whose lives and futures were at risk — no matter what part their country had played in the war.

And for nearly 80 years, UNICEF’s mission to protect and provide support for every child has not wavered. Thanks to this dedication, enormous strides have been made. Take a look:

One quarter of all births occur in UNICEF-supported health centers. And under-5 deaths are down 60 percent since 1990.

In the last 50 years, vaccines have saved 154 million lives. In fact, 45 percent of all children under 5 are protected by vaccines procured by UNICEF

80 percent of all ready-to-use therapeutic food is secured by UNICEF. And since 2000, the number of children with stunted growth due to malnutrition has declined by 40 percent.

Each year, UNICEF responds to over 400 humanitarian crises in over 140 countries.

UNICEF reaches more children and young people than any other international organization.

~85 percent of UNICEF staff are out in the field, working directly with partners on the ground to deliver impact for children. UNICEF stays long after emergencies - investing in long-term development and helping communities weather future shocks.

89 percent of UNICEF spending goes directly to programs for children. UNICEF can deliver lifesaving supplies nearly anywhere in the world within 72 hours. Strong partnerships with governments, NGOs, civil society and the private sector enable success and innovation.

Global funding cuts are exacerbating the challenges of meeting children with the support they need in an increasingly risk-filled world.

But the progress made — this real, tangible impact that UNICEF’s work has had on children — is worth fighting for. Saving and protecting millions of lives is a collective endeavor, and UNICEF is determined to continue delivering for the world’s children.
