SEIU California President David Huerta represents the best of our nation’s labor movement. He is a proud Angeleno—born and raised in a union family in Los Angeles County—and has dedicated his life to fighting working people like janitors, and hotel and airport workers.

On Friday night, David was exercising his constitutional rights and lawfully observing immigration enforcement activity in his community when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents violently arrested him. He is still in ICE custody and set to be arraigned on Monday in Los Angeles.

Since then, the Trump administration has only escalated its attacks on the Los Angeles community, deploying the military against our union brothers, sisters and siblings. The militarization of our communities and neighborhoods to crush peaceful protest will only serve to escalate, inflame the situation and endanger our families.

The AFL-CIO and our affiliated unions will continue to peacefully demand justice for our union brother until he is released. SEIU is holding a #FreeDavidEndRaids day of action across the country on Monday, with events currently planned in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Raleigh, Sacramento, Seattle and Washington, D.C. What happened to David on Friday is about more than just a single leader. It is an attack on all of us who believe in the fundamental American right to stand up for justice, and speak out for the rights of workers.

For generations, unions have stood shoulder to shoulder with civil rights groups and community partners to peacefully protest grave injustices. We continue to do that today.

We oppose immigration enforcement tactics that breed fear and stoke violence. We stand firmly together in our demand for Huerta’s immediate release and, more broadly, call on the administration to halt its attack on immigrant workers who feed our families, care for our seniors and contribute to our economy every single day.
