NPR: “Supreme Court Delivers Major Victory To LGBTQ Employees”
John, the Supreme Court ruled that LGBTQ Americans cannot be discriminated against in the workplace on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
After a difficult few months, this is a tremendous victory and exactly the kind of good news we needed -- especially as we celebrate Pride month.
In their landmark decision, the assenting Supreme Court justices wrote that the protections established in the 1964 Civil Rights Act extend to LGBTQ workers, too:
"We do not hesitate to recognize... an employer who fires an individual merely for being gay or transgender defies the law."
This is an essential step forward in the fight for LGBTQ rights -- but it won’t be the last. As my friend Joe Biden said, “Today's decision is another step in our march toward equality for all... But we're not done.”
Our fight isn’t over. John, we need to secure FULL protections for LGBTQ Americans -- will you sign our open letter demanding Majority Leader Mitch McConnell take action on equality for all in the Senate?
President Obama and Vice President Biden were allies in the fight for LGBTQ rights and made great progress during their Administration.
They have been replaced by an Administration that is expressly at odds with the LGBTQ rights movement. Just last week, the Trump Administration rolled back critical health care protections for trangender patients.
And McConnell has been a rubber stamp for Trump’s dangerous agenda at every given opportunity. For more than a year, the Equality Act -- which would further protect LGBTQ Americans against discrimination in housing, health care, and more -- has sat on McConnell’s desk without action.
Enough is enough. Will you sign our open letter demanding McConnell take action on equality for all Americans?
Thank you,
TC
