John, as of last night, Trump has deployed American troops against American civilians.
As a Marine, I know the primary responsibility of our military is to defend our country from foreign threats, not to batter American protestors. And as a Senator, I can tell you that this action from Trump is deliberate chaos and an unnecessary escalation.
Trump isn’t trying to solve anything—he’s putting on a show to look tough on TV. He’s hoping this blows up so he can crack down even harder, but that’s not how this has to go.
If literally any Republicans in Congress are listening, I am still interested in solutions that will actually bring about law and order. I've released a border security and immigration reform plan that will unleash economic prosperity and make America safe.
Most of the people serving in the National Guard signed up to serve their community during things like earthquakes, fires, or natural disasters. They deserve better than this.
I’m going to do whatever I can to prevent those good men and women from being used as political pawns by this president, and I’m going to keep working to stop Trump’s assault on our democracy.
I swore an oath to support and defend our Constitution, and I am not going to break it.
