John,
New York is facing a housing crisis, and for too long, our leaders
didn’t take action to solve it.
That changed last year, when I signed a once-in-a-generation plan
into law that addresses the housing crisis and uses every tool at our
disposal to create more homes for New Yorkers.
Our plan included creative ways to build housing in every corner of
the state — from our smallest towns to our biggest cities — in ways
that empowered communities to create housing in ways that worked for
them.
Take New York City: Outdated laws made it nearly impossible to
repurpose commercial buildings for housing, leaving thousands of new
homes out of reach. We finally changed those laws and today, we’re
seeing the impact of those changes.
New York City’s 5 Times Square is being transformed from underused
office space into 1,250 new homes. And projects like these are
starting throughout New York City.
I
wrote about this massive transformation in the New York Daily
News.
Solving the housing crisis is how we begin to create a more
affordable New York, but it’s certainly not the end. Learn
more about how I’m fighting to make our state more affordable for you
and your family.
Ever Upward,
Gov. Kathy Hochul
