Friend,
Yes, you read that right: there is something good about tariffs.
Not because they help the economy. They don't. In fact, tariffs…
* are a tax on American consumers and businesses,
* raise the price of everything we build, grow, and use, and
* make life harder for individuals and businesses.
But their backfiring is doing something we desperately need.
It's waking people up.
Recent polling shows that 58% of Americans now oppose tariffs. Even more
striking: 64% of young Americans — the very people we're trying to reach —
reject tariffs entirely.
This is a powerful "teaching moment," and that's where FEE steps in.
At the Foundation for Economic Education, we believe these economic lessons
shouldn't come from hardship. We should be equipping young people to understand
why tariffs fail — before they experience the fallout.
And that's what we do through our FEE in the Classroom program.
We teach students about the awe-inspiring power of free-market economics, how
protectionism ultimately harms a country's effort to protect itself, and how
reduced barriers to trade raise global prosperity.
And when students learn these truths? They don't forget them.
"I learned a lot about how trading works and how happiness increases when
there is a wider trading pool!"
— High School Student, FEE in the Classroom program (April 2025)

In short, free trade ultimately benefits the United States. Because of the
backfiring of tariffs, Americans are reminded of that simple truth.
The tariffs have brought a consensus among Americans that free international
tradewith no restrictions is a net gain for their nation, just as for the world.
Throughout history, free global trade has exponentially raised the standards
of living, reduced conflict, fostered diplomacy, caused immense scientific and
social progress, and brought billions from the depths of poverty into the arms
of prosperity.
When nations trade with nations, when individuals trade with individuals, it
is a basic economic truth that both parties benefit. When this voluntary trade
is allowed to flourish over time, the progress is astronomical. It's as simple
as that.
…but many young people aren't aware of this.
Many students who attend our FEE in the Classroom program tell us they are
unfamiliar with free market economic concepts and this monumental story of
progress.
But once we educate them, they become lifetime advocates for tried-and-true
free market principles.
FEE is trying to reach more students, but I need your help.
These workshops are free to schools, but not free to run. That's why I'm
asking:
Will you give a gift of $10, $35, $50, or even $100 today and help us reach
more students with the economic lessons they're not getting anywhere else?
