John,
We’ve got some good news: The attorneys general of California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York have formally petitioned the FDA to lift outdated, unnecessary restrictions on mifepristone, the medication used in over half of all abortions in the U.S.
These state leaders are stepping up as national protections remain under threat and right-wing disinformation floods our public discourse.
Their message is clear: mifepristone is safe and effective, and people deserve access without politically motivated barriers.
Despite a 25-year record of safety and effectiveness, mifepristone is still subject to extraordinary restrictions under the FDA’s Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) program. These rules create real roadblocks for patients and providers, especially those in underserved areas, who face increasing obstacles as the Trump administration attacks Planned Parenthood and forces clinic closures.
Earlier this week, Trump’s FDA administrator pledged to investigate mifepristone, despite its proven efficacy and strong track record. The AGs fighting back are proving what we know to be true: leadership in this fight will come from the states—which is why 80% of our programs are focused on electing state and local leaders.
We’re proud to stand behind these pro-choice champions, and dedicated to electing more leaders to state legislatures, governors’ mansions, and court rooms across the country who will go to bat for our reproductive freedom.
With hope,
Team Vote Pro-Choice
