Here’s what A.G. Holder had to say about this case:
"Federal law, the Supreme Court’s own precedent, and basic fairness dictate that Black Louisianians must vote on truly representative and fair maps. A decision that does not recognize that fact or that weakens the Voting Rights Act of 1965 would signal an alarming retreat into a past that so many have fought so long and so hard to pull the country from.”
The facts: Black voters in Louisiana make up roughly one-third of the state’s population, yet for decades had an opportunity to elect a candidate of their choice in only one of the state’s six congressional districts. Then, after a long legal fight supported by our affiliate, the National Redistricting Foundation, the state enacted a new, fair map last year.
But our fight didn’t end there. That’s because map manipulators are still working to undermine Black voting power in Louisiana.
After that, however, a group of radical conservative activists brought a new case in one of the most conservative federal courts in the country, blatantly ignoring the Supreme Court’s recent precedent in Allen v. Milligan. Unfortunately, that new court struck down Louisiana’s new, fair map.
Now the Supreme Court is expected to rule in the days ahead on the future of Louisiana’s map and this hard-fought Black-opportunity district. Sign up for text updates to get real-time breaking news as soon as it happens. >> [link removed]
