We cannot cling to the idea of "going back to normal" because "normal" is what got us here.

Dear John,

We’ve seen the pictures of doctors and nurses forced to wear garbage bags as personal protective equipment.

We’ve heard the stories of teachers paying for school supplies out of their own pockets, often taking second and third jobs to make ends meet.

We’ve read the headlines about COVID patients getting stuck with exorbitant hospital bills, reaching anywhere from $73,000 to over $1 million.

But somehow, we’ve seen no shortage of riot gear or tear gas for the militarized police forces cracking down on peaceful protesters across the country.

Our latest video lays out 7 ways 2020 has exposed America.

It's tragic that it took record unemployment, graphic videos of Black Americans being murdered, and millions of people taking to the streets for many of us to grasp how backwards, broken, and racist our system really is.

We cannot cling to the idea of "going back to normal" because "normal" is what got us here.

We can no longer accept piecemeal reforms of our broken systems. We need to embrace radical transformation and undergo a fundamental reinvestment in the American people.

Let's get to work.

Thanks for watching,

P.S. In case you missed it, I sat down with writer, educator, and poet Clint Smith to discuss America's failure to reckon with our history of slavery and how this movement for Black lives — and the emergent demands — must finally force it do so. Please watch and share.
